World Laughter Day was created in 1998 on the 10th January by Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga movement.
Dr. Kataria, a family doctor in India, was inspired to start the Laughter Yoga movement in part by the facial feedback hypothesis, which postulates that a person's facial expressions can have an effect on their emotions.
So what is Laughter Yoga?
The celebration of World Laughter Day is a positive manifestation for world peace and is intended to build up a global consciousness of togetherness and friendship through laughter. It is most often celebrated by gatherings of people in public places with the sole purpose being laughter.
A group of people get together and simply laugh. They focus on facial expressions and stretching your face in these odd shapes will in theory create more elasticated and youthful looking skin - enough to make you smile in itself, and laughing is also good for the muscles in your tummy! Have you ever laughed so much it hurt? You will see what I mean and if not… even more reason to take a laughter yoga class or celebrate world laughter day on May 1st!
The practice is becoming evermore popular and it sounds silly and yes you might laugh at the thought of it but I guess that is a positive thing in itself right? L’aughter all, smiling and finding things funny is good for you. The Laughter Yoga movement is now hosting thousands of Laughter workshops in more than 105 countries. I am almost positive that even if you started out feeling blue and went there with a frown you would begin to laugh even if it is at other people's expressions. We dare you to try it!
